Vintage Christmas Sampler – Ohio Star Variation

I call this a variation on the Ohio Star block because in the corners I added half square triangles (HSTs). I liked it because it allowed me to add a little more color to the block and it allowed me to add more visual interest. This block is part of my Vintage Christmas Sampler…which I am really hoping will be done before Christmas!

You will need the following materials –

• large scraps of three different materials
• 8.5 inch quilting square
• rotary cutter
• pen to mark on fabric
• basic sewing supplies

Cut your fabric:

Make your Quarter Square Triangles (QSTs)

On the white fabric mark from one corner to the other, place red & white fabric right sides together, and sew 1/4 on either side of mark.

You now have enough triangle to make 2 squares. Repeat with the other red & white 5.25 inch squares.

You will want to match your seams, pin and sew the triangle together. You will make four total. I like to press my seams open because it reduces the overall bulk when you go to quilt your project.

Next, make your half square triangle using the white and green 5″ squares. Using the same method from the QSTs, mark on the white fabric – corner to corner, place white and green fabrics right sides together, and sew 1/4″ on either side of marked line. For Half Square Triangles – you only cut ONE time.

Trim down to 4.5 inches and remove dogears.

Lay out your block. Sew your rows together and finish your block!
