Spike’s First Quilt! (and mine too!)

Yellow Bee Quilt - https://www.sewbittersweetdesigns.comI loaded my first quilt on Spike yesterday and started quilting the first block today! I am very excited. My brilliant friend Vicki from Orchid Owl Quilts recommended getting some plexiglass to draw on and practice designs over the top of the quilt.  Vicki has the same machine as I do, except she has Lightning Stitch – a more advanced regulator.  Yesterday I went to home depot and picked up a sheet of Polycarbonate plastic, not quite the same as plexiglass but it serves its purpose – though I did learn I can’t use Expo Markers on it, they leave a stain, but Crayola brand dry erase markers work fantastically!

Practice drawing - https://www.sewbittersweetdesigns.comI have a doctor’s appointment today and won’t be able to do much more quilting, but I wanted to at least get this design in. I may still do something in the background of the block. This quilt is a sampler block quilt and now it will be a free motion quilt sampler too!

Yellow Bee Quilt - FMQ - https://www.sewbittersweetdesigns.comI hope everyone has a very happy Friday and a wonderful Easter weekend if you are celebrating.

Anne the Long Arm Quilter

Anne is pretty much fearless and I have always tried to instill in her (and will continue to try) the idea that she can do anything she wants so long as she works hard. She wanted to be a long arm quilter so here she is…being a long arm quilter!

What can I say, she’s a natural!

Meet Spike!

Sorry I didn’t post this earlier, I was a bit under the weather, but seeing as today is National Quilt Day, it seemed like the perfect day to introduce Spike to you!

Spike - The Innova - https://www.sewbittersweetdesigns.comSpike is a 22″ Innova Long Arm with a standard regulator.  He sits on a 12 foot table that is squished into my studio. It is so awesome to have him here.  Anne and I have already been having fun quilting with him!

First Long Arm Piece - https://www.sewbittersweetdesigns.comThis is the first thing I made on Spike, really just trying to get my quilting legs under me. Trying out lots of different designs and seeing what I like best. I have my first quilt picked out that I want to do on him, it is a sampler quilt so that I can try lots of different designs out and one that is for my home so if it isn’t perfect, no one will know but me!

Last night I loaded some white linen that has been sitting in my stash for 4.5 years to practice on. Capri, my Innova Rep and wonderful new friend recommended drawing out an 8″ square grid to practice in and helped me a lot, less blank canvas feeling. Having a defined space to work in helped me a lot. Here is some of what I stitched last night.

FMQ Sampler - https://www.sewbittersweetdesigns.comI am having so much fun and Anne is too! I will post a video tomorrow of her on the long arm. As soon as it was set up the first words she said to me were “Mommy, can I please go first?” She had to wait and go second, but she was super excited that she go to long arm quilt. This is the beginning of awesome things for both of us!

Have a great National Quilting Day! Make something cozy!

Generation Q Magazine

Do you subscribe to Generation Q Magazine? I love their magazine, and I have since it came out. It is slightly smaller than your standard size magazine, but it is jam packed with great patterns and articles. They also have a fun regular feature where they draw part of a quilt block, just a few simple lines, and ask readers to send in submissions of how they would finish the block. They usually show two or three entries in the next issue. It is so fun to see how something can inspire two people to head in completely opposite and beautiful directions.

You may be asking yourself, why is Melissa blogging about Generation Q Magazine today? Well, today the 2016 Spring issue is hitting newsstands and I’m one of the designers featured with a never before seen pattern! So head to your local retailer (for me that would be Barnes and Noble) and pick up your copy, this is what you are looking for:

Do you want to see which pattern in the magazine is mine?

Fade In Fade Out - https://www.sewbittersweetdesigns.comThis quilt is called Fade In Fade Out and was originally designed for a black and white challenge. I loved this design and decided that instead of submitting it to the exhibit, I would submit it to Generation Q Magazine instead, I was so excited when they accepted me. For the exhibit I ended up designing and submitting a different quilt – Hypnotic Eye and that one was ultimately accepted into the exhibit so it was like winning twice!

The quilt was given a beautiful photograph for the magazine, I am so grateful to their professional photographer, she did a beautiful job!

Gen Q Fade In Fade outSo next time you are at the bookstore or your local fabric shop, pick up a copy!

Have a wonderful Tuesday!

Tomorrow my long arm will be set up (I picked up the machine on Saturday) and I will be posting photos on Thursday for you!

Quilt the Rainbow

Rainbow Mini - https://www.sewbittersweetdesigns.comI had so much fun making this little rainbow mini quilt. It measures 18″ x 18″ and was a great opportunity to use up some of my solid charms that I have collected through swaps over the years.  This is the last project I will quilt on my Janome before my new Innova long arm arrives. I am heading to pick it up this weekend and it will be built on the 23rd. In the meantime, I will be starting on a king size quilt today that will be my first quilt on the long arm. Good thing I got a 12 foot table!

Happy Friday!
